Membership Grade & Criteria
CRITERIA FOR MEMBERSHIP OF THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF DIRECTORS NIGERIA
Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria is an apex professional body with a mandate to cater and speak for Directors in their individual capacities across the various sectors of the economy. It is one of Nigeria’s leading economic policy and corporate governance advocacy institution, which has consistently promoted innovative policies aimed at ensuring private sector led economic growth.
Membership criteria are designed to ensure that members meet certain professional standards and are committed to the principles of good governance and leadership.
General Criteria for Membership
In line with the provision of the act that establishes the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria, all applicants shall:

Be of good character;
-
Have attained the age of 21 years;
-
Not be convicted of any offence involving criminal act, fraud or dishonesty within and outside Nigeria;

Be of sound mind;
-
Not be adjudged a bankrupt and
-
Fulfil all requirements stipulated by the Governing Council of the Institute
Specific Membership Categories and Criteria
CIoD Nigeria offers different categories of membership to cater to the diverse needs of business leaders. Some of the key membership categories include:
Associate
To qualify as an Associate member, an applicant must be:

A sole proprietor of an unincorporated business existing for a minimum of three years.
-
A senior executive of a national company reporting directly to a board member for a minimum of two years.
-
A senior executive in an education or health authority or other public body of similar standing for a minimum of two years.
-
A company director or partner in a professional practice, or have a profession and be working in industry or commerce of less than three years.
-
In addition to the above, the applicant must have attended CIoD Nigeria Company Direction Course I.
-
Elected members are entitled to use the designation “AM.CIoD” after their names
Member
To qualify as a member, an applicant must be:
-
A Proprietor of an incorporated business existing for a minimum of five (5) years, with evidence of at least three years statutory tax return and audited account.
-
A Company Director for a minimum of five (5) years and be in business for a minimum of five (5) years.
-
Director or equivalent not less than grade level 16 at the Federal and State Government with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience.
-
In addition to the above, the applicant must have attended CIoD Nigeria Company Direction Course I.

Elected members are entitled to use the designation “M.CIoD” after their names
Fellow
-
For consideration, a member should have been a director of a reputable organization for not less than 10 years.
-
Have been a full Member of CIoD for at least seven years
-
Must be financially up to date in subscription payment for not less than five years.

Must have attended any of the following training programmes, CDCII, ACDP, or any of the Foreign Leadership Courses of the Institute

Be an active member of the Institute i.e.

Attends training and events of the Institute
-
Must be or have been a member of at least one committee of the Institute.
-
Elected members to fellowship grade are entitled to use the designation “F.CIoD” after their names.
APPLICATION PROCESS
-
Application Form: Prospective members must complete an online application form, providing detailed information about their professional background, experience, and qualifications.
-
References: Applicants may be required to provide references from existing IoD members or other professionals who can attest to their suitability for membership.

Attendance at a compulsory Course: applicants are expected to attend the Company Direction Course I as part of the membership assessment process.

Fees: Membership involves payment of an annual fee, which varies depending on the membership category
